Building a Community with Your Students

Last year I had the opportunity to coach a wonderful teacher in her 1:1 iPad classroom. She taught me so much about the importance of  allowing students to have a voice in the classroom. By the end of the year, we really had great conversations about books, ideas, and ways we could create using the iPads. So this summer I decided to create a unit to assist in developing students' voice and character through conversations using literature, history, and current events. The unit teaches 10 character words and goes through the same lesson structure below for each word:

If you will click on my blog button below you can check out my freebie. This freebie will allow you to teach the character word Integrity to your students using the book A Bad Case of Stripes. There are also links to articles and videos that are great for conversations about being a person of integrity. Once students have examined the word they can exhibit their understanding through a project using technology. I saw lots of cute ideas of having students draw or take their picture and draw stripes on their face like Camilla in the story. I took the idea a step further and had students use the Brushes and Skitch app. Students will then label their picture "Be Yourself" and list ways in which they can show integrity and do the right thing in the classroom (Boys can draw their hair to look different if they do not like the longer hair). Here is the finished product:
