We have been exploring ways to make certain numbers (see here) during calendar time all year and now we have expanded that to breaking the number into groups. During large group I gave each child a set of 15 cubes and then wrote the number 10 on the board. I asked them to think of different ways to show that number with their cubes and asked them to share their answer with the class. Using the Educreations app I recorded a few of their answers and asked a different child to show me what that would look like if we wrote what they said on the board. The video you see below is those responses recorded together.
After that activity I wrote the number 12 on the board and sent the kids to our math centers to record different ways to make 12 with manipulatives. I walked around and took pictures of some of the ideas they had. We gathered back on the carpet and using Educreations again we worked together to decide what to write under each picture. When we were done I simply took a screenshot of the app to save the image (see above.) We repeated this activity for several other numbers.
